Advocacy
Advocacy is when somebody else helps you to say the things that you want to say. Sometimes as a child or young person it can seem really hard to get adults to understand what you want to say. It can be very frightening being in adult places, like a court or even a review, and trying to make people listen to your ideas and feelings. An adult who you trust, and who is good at listening to you and explaining what you want to say, can be an “advocate” for you.
“Voice” is the name of the advocacy service that works for all young people in care in Hertfordshire. Some of the ways that they can help is by coming to meetings with you, talking to people on your behalf, helping you to write letters, helping you to make a complaint, or just by being someone you can talk to about the action you want to take yourself.
‘Voice is a free and confidential service and they won’t discuss anything you don’t want them to unless you agree. The only exception to this is if the advocate believes that you are in danger, or that you are putting someone else at risk.
