Changing Schools

When you are given a new care placement Children, Schools and Families will try to make sure that you can stay at your school. If you have to move school, they must try to find you a new one within 10 days. If the school is full, they will have to provide you with some education in the meantime, while they are trying to sort out where you will go to school.

If you do not get a place at the school that you wanted to go to, your social worker or carers can appeal on your behalf. You should have the same chance to appeal as any other young person.

Your social worker and carers should involve you in choosing a school, asking you what you want, taking you to see new schools and helping you to think about the good and bad points of any school that you have visited.

When you do move, it is the job of the designated teacher to make sure that your school records are sent on quickly to your new school.

Moving schools and being “new” will mean that pupils and teachers will want to know about you. You and your carer could talk to the designated teacher about what you want to keep private and who should know that Children, Schools and Families are looking you after.
