Guidance on the education of Children and Young People in Care, your rights!
In May 2000 the government brought out Guidance called “The Education of Children and Young People in Public Care”. It shows the people who look after you what they can do to help you get the most out of your education.
The Guidance tells the Children’s Schools and Families Service that they should;
Work together with everyone involved in looking after you to help you with your education
Keep really good records about your education and remember to celebrate when you do well
Listen to children and young people to find out how they feel about their education
Make sure that every school appoints a Designated Teacher to help you if you wish to speak to them. They will know all about the care system and how it may affect your education
Make sure you have suitable education. If you move placements they should try to keep you at the same school. If you have to change school, they should find you a new school within 10 days.
Make sure that you have a Personal Education Plan
