National Insurance number

On or near to your 16th birthday you should be sent a card, a bit like a credit card, with a National Insurance Number on it.  You need this number for any job that you may want to do and if you need to claim benefits in the future.  If you don’t get a card, speak to your social worker about it or contact your local Department of Social Security Benefits Office.
