Remand

If a person has been charged with committing a serious offence and the court thinks that they may commit another offence while waiting for their full trial (or that they may not turn up for their full trial) they will “remand” them.

For adults this means that they are often kept in prison “on remand” waiting for their trial.  For young people the court can “remand” them to Children, Schools and Families (this can also be called “remanded into local authority care”).  This means that Children, Schools and Families has to keep a close eye on that young person and know where they are or what they are up to.  A young person is "looked after" by Children Schools and Families i.e. they are "in care".

Young people are not “locked up” in a secure unit during remand unless the crime is really serious and Children, Schools and Families or the court are particularly worried about their behaviour.  Most young people on “remand” to Children, Schools and Families will be placed in special foster families or in a Children’s Home.
