Citizenship
Citizenship education is about helping young people understand the rights and responsibilities they have as members of society. In September 2002, citizenship became part of the national curriculum in schools and is taught in PSHE lessons. Citizenship education means that young people will be able to:
• Know their rights and responsibilities
• Analyse and discuss significant issues
• Develop an understanding of how society works
• Have an opportunity to play an active role in society and make a difference.
Through these lessons you gain discussion and debating skills, research, communication, and negotiation skills and learn how to think critically about issues and participate to make a difference. Citizenship is taught in many schools throughout the world and almost every school in Europe.
