Anti- Discriminatory Practice
When people are discriminated against, they are treated differently because others think there is something “different” about them. There are many differences between people such as their skin colour, religion, race, physical ability, ability to learn and their sexual orientation. For young people living away from home they may feel “different” because they don’t live with their families.
Hertfordshire County Council believes that no one in Hertfordshire should be discriminated against because they are “different” from others and so they have a policy of Anti-Discriminatory Practice. This means that the council expects everyone who works for them to give lots of thought to how they do things so as everyone gets the same level of service. There are also ways of being able to complain if anyone does feel discriminated against. Obviously different people do need different services, but it is important that people are treated with respect and thoughtfulness about the type of service they need, rather than being judged by what is different about them.
If you think that you are being treated unfairly for some reason, you must tell someone. Perhaps you could talk to your care worker or someone from Voice or you could ring someone using information in the help lines section.
